Ukrainian forces used drones to attack an airfield deep inside Russia last month. NEW LOOK Sign up to get the inside scoop on today’s biggest stories in markets, tech, and business — delivered daily. AdvertisementRussia has pulled dozens of aircraft away from the front lines in response to a massive Ukrainian drone attack on a military base deep behind enemy lines, according to new Western intelligence. The late-April attack was not the first time Ukrainian deep strikes have forced Russia to relocate its vulnerable assets. Even before the Kushchyovskaya strike, Ukraine has tried going after Russia's airbases in an apparent bid to stomp out the glide-bomb threat.

Read previewRussia has been pounding Ukraine's second largest city with strikes, intensifying its missile, drone, and glide bomb attacks on Kharkiv in recent weeks. The situation is dire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said, and highlights the desperate need for more air-defense systems to keep Ukraine protected. On the heels of the attacks, Zelenskyy said the "situation in Kharkiv is very harsh," noting that "Russians began using guided aerial bombs against the city almost daily." And from March 18-24, just a six-day period, Russia dropped a staggering 700 glide bombs on Ukraine. Speaking about the Patriots on Saturday, Zelenskyy said that "there are air defense systems around the world that can help.

Short flight times, small radar signatures, and non-ballistic trajectories make glide bombs particularly difficult to intercept as well. "When the Ukrainian air-defense bandwidth is all tied up, they then move in with the fixed-wing aircraft to conduct these glide-bomb attacks," he said. This includes the 1,100-pound FAB-500, 3,300-pound FAB-1500, and 6,600-pound FAB-3000 bombs — all of which can be modified and turned into glide bombs. "That makes the mission planning for attacks with standoff weapons that can hit fixed targets, like the glide bombs, quite practical," he explained. And it won't be entirely the fault of glide bombs — Kyiv needs all the tools its forces can get right now.

Azerbaijan's biggest arms supplier has been Russia but it will likely acquire jets from elsewhere. AdvertisementThe small, oil-rich South Caucasus country of Azerbaijan has big plans to upgrade its modest fleet of fighter jets over the next decade. However, rather than turn to Russia, its traditional arms supplier for decades, Baku will likely acquire modern fighters from Pakistan and Turkey. "Neither Russia nor Western democracies are ideal suppliers, even though Russia has historically sold arms to Azerbaijan," Roblin told Insider. Ukraine says it shot down three Russian Su-34 jets in one day. On Thursday, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine said it had shot down three Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bombers that day. The reported kills extend what appears to have been a successful month for Ukraine's air defenders and a devastating one for Russian aviation. Last October, Ukraine said that it shot down five Russian Su-25 close-air-support planes over a 10-day period. Its defenders have relied heavily on American-made Patriot systems and other Western-made systems, but Ukraine also has various other systems at its disposal.

Indonesia Scraps Plan to Buy Mirage Fighter Jets From Qatar

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia has ditched a controversial plan to buy 733 million euros ($790 million) worth of Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets previously used by Qatar, the defence ministry spokesperson said late on Saturday. "There is no purchase of Mirage jets. Last month, the ministry said the deal to purchase the 12 fighter jets was delayed due to fiscal constraints and that the military would order a retrofit for its existing Sukhoi and F-16 aircraft instead. The planned purchase garnered controversy when it was announced last year, as lawmakers said the secondhand jets were old. Prabowo has overseen the military's efforts to modernise its ageing fleet, which include purchases of Rafale fighter jets, drones from Turkish Aerospace and fighter jets and transport helicopters from U.S. companies Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

CNN —Russia’s leading aircraft manufacturer says it’s completed a successful test flight of a new widebody passenger airplane that it claims could replace Western aircraft in the country’s skies. UAC, which oversees Russian aviation brands including Tupolev, Ilyushin and Sukhoi, said the plane will be capable of carrying up to 370 passengers, a capacity that would put it alongside the likes of Airbus’ A340 or Boeing’s 777. As of 2022, only 144 active Russian airline planes were built in Russia, according to data provided by aviation analytics firm Cirium. “Although Moscow won’t admit it, the sanctions that followed the Ukraine invasion have really damaged Russian aviation,” Murdo Morrison, head of strategic content at FlightGlobal, tells CNN. Addressing concerns, Russia’s Ministry of Transport said at the time that flight safety on Russia-operated aircraft meets international standards.

Russians are not only using car tires to protect their aircraft from Ukrainian "kamikaze" drones. A Telegram channel recently posted images of what's described as an anti-drone structure at a Russian airfield. According to Ukrainian sources, the tires are being used as a sort of makeshift protection from attacks carried out with kamikaze drones. A rough translation of the first part FighterBomber's post reads as follows:"This solution was urgently developed, and literally in a couple of days it was installed at one airfield to protect aircraft from drones. How the system works is not clear: maybe the net is used to repel hostile drones that would get caught up in the wires.

A photo surfaced online showing a Russian Su-34 fighter-bomber covered in tires. The photo appeared just days after satellite images showed Russian bombers also covered in tires. The approach comes after drone strikes have bombarded Russian air bases, costing the country both bombers and airlift planes. A modified R-360 Neptune anti-ship cruise missile may be Ukraine's new long-range missile. The new weapon reportedly destroyed a Russian S-400 "Triumf" missile system in Crimea. Ukraine developed the weapon after Western states were reluctant to supply long-range missiles. Ukraine claimed that the new, domestically designed missile system destroyed Putin's highly-prized Russian S-400 "Triumf" missile system in Crimea last month. The report said the cheap cost and large supply of the bombs meant they could be used extensively in the conflict.

Indonesia, Boeing sign deal for sale of F-15 fighter jets

JAKARTA, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Indonesia's defence ministry and U.S. planemaker Boeing (BA.N) have signed an agreement on the sale of 24 F-15EX fighter jets to help modernise the Southeast Asian country's ageing fleet, the ministry and the company said. Boeing and the defence ministry did not provide details on the deal's value. This year, Jakarta bought 42 Dassault (AM.PA) Rafale fighter jets for $8.1 billion. It has also purchased 12 used Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets in an $800 million deal that drew criticism as the aircraft were considered too old. Russia's limited use of its air force in Ukraine has surprised US Air Force leaders. Those leaders are surprised in large part because Ukraine is using air defenses that Russians designed. "I would say that I was somewhat surprised" by Russia's inability to control the air and knock out Ukrainian air defenses, Hecker said. Ukrainian forces are now using US-made Patriot missiles and the US-Norwegian-designed NASAMS to defend against long-range threats as well as several Western-designed systems for short-range air defense. US intelligence assessments leaked online this spring suggested Ukraine could expend its supply of surface-to-air missiles for several systems by mid-year.

The Swedish jets were specifically built to take on Russia's advanced fighter jets. "Today we discussed in detail the future steps regarding the possibility of opening the subject of receiving Swedish Gripens," Zelenskyy said in the joint press conference, per Reuters. Sweden previously said it would not send these jets to assist the war effort. This week, the United States finally approved plans to deliver F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, which the country's officials have asked for since the air battle between Russia has reached a stalemate. For one, the Gripen's electronic-warfare capabilities are reportedly able to outmaneuver Russia's Sukhoi jets, which have even eluded F-16s.
